I have found that for musicians at all levels, especially beginners, exploration is key. Learning an instrument is like building a relationship with that instrument and discovering what sounds you can create together. I use this guided discovery as a tool for discussing technique and musical ideas. Once enough fundamentals are grasped, I introduce repertoire which will lead to a recital performance. I believe to be successful, you have to want whatever it is you are working towards. When it comes to music, this is especially true. I love seeing people 'get' it when learning, and the joy in their eyes spills through in the form of their improved skills, attitude, and smiles. I also believe that for some, playing music can be a sort of therapy in disguise, because not only does it take the mind off the day-to-day grind, but in doing so you gain knowledge and experience with every strum. My teaching style is very analytical yet engaging! I try to establish a good relationship before pushing a student. At that point I will ask the student to play to the best of his/her ability. I teach in a style that helps children isolate problem areas, so that they can practice specific excerpts they are struggling with. As I have taught for many years, I feel encouraged and motivated when I can pass along my love for music. Nothing is more inspiring to me than to see someone's face light up when they pick up their instrument and learn. I set tailored goals for my students to reach every week, so that they have specific targets to reach.
