I typically start my students by learning the basics of the instrument (i.e. how it is made, basic care, how to hold, etc.). For younger students, or those who are not experienced with reading music, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. If they are learning their instrument in school as well, I like to work through any music given by their teacher. I have been teaching now for more than 7 years, starting fresh out of High School. I encourage my students to follow their dreams and put their all into their craft. I find that my students reap better rewards when they have a consistent and concise method of practicing, to which they can develop with my help and then "out grow" their need for my instruction. For voice, I tend to start with vocal conditioning, breath work, and easy pop, Disney, and musical theatre repertoire. For piano, I love using Alfred's Basic Piano Library to start, but I am flexible with books and resources to meet the student's needs. For ukulele, I start with learning basic chords and learning to play easy songs For guitar, I follow the Guitar for Kids book to learn basic chords and notes, then move towards sight playing, and playing songs with different strumming patterns.
