Hello! My name is Sophia Cannella and I am a music and theatre educator located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. A little about me, I am a voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, and acting teacher. I have over 5 years of experience teaching privately and teaching large classes, both online and in person. I have been trained as a singer since age 8, and have played instruments since I was 9. I am graduating in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre Performance from Oakland University. Read More

After the first lesson, I would introduce an adaptable routine of how to maintain healthy habits for retention, pick a few etudes and duets, and collaborate on choosing a solo that would follow along with their current level of playing. In between the lesson, I would run a series of Stretching, Breathing, Alignment, and imagining a healthy environment and state of being as they are crucial to the foundation of each lesson. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to 2013, where I first began tutoring local junior high students for the summer band program. I have been teaching private lessons and studying how to be a better educator ever since. My private home studio has been running for over 3 years now. In private lessons I incorporate a complex combination of music theory, ear training, popular music, and classical! At the end of every lesson I take detailed notes on the students progress, and always check in to make sure we are playing something they want to learn! Read More
Instruments: Violin, Music
Beginning violin is important. I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to help teach the functionality and basic building blocks of playing the violin. Moving forward, the best introduction into violin music itself is the Suzuki Violin School volume set. Each book helps students through various levels during their beginner phase. These pieces not only serve as educational material but also as solo repertoire for beginners in recitals. As students learn these methods, I start to tailor lessons suitable for them, allowing them to choose what they desire to play, or something that they would be eager or excited to play. Read More

I like to keep students engaged, giving them practical exercises and studies that lead to a goal that we establish together. I believe that setting and meeting performance goals is one sure-fire way to ensure independent study and keep our lessons progressing. I use different method books for beginners depending on age and in which direction they intend on pursuing. All lessons and materials are customized to students' preferences and tastes. Read More
