Hello everyone! I am a board certified music therapist, but have thoroughly enjoyed teaching since I was 18! I graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor Degree in Music Therapy. For beginning students, I typically start with Suzuki Book 1. A strong foundation is key to playing the violin/viola. I do teach the Suzuki method, but I understand that method of teaching does not work for all students--one size does not fit all. I believe all students have the innate ability to learn an instrument despite their background. I find the Suzuki books provide a strong foundation with the ability to play full songs from the start. I love being able to send students on their way for the day knowing that they put their best foot forward. Even if they did not come to a lesson prepared, being able to see growth in the small amount of time I'm with them is enough for me. I understand that every student progresses at their own pace, so I work with them and their parents to make sure that realistic goals are set and written down to hold the student, parent, and myself to this growth plan. Eventually, a students love for the violin will naturally lend itself to a desire for further violin instruction. Students who desire violin instruction progress the fastest. I give students the amount of instruction and new information that I believe they can handle but that will also help them progress as rapidly as possible without overloading them. Every child can develop musical skills if taught in the right way. Clean, proper , smart and with dedicated concentration. I think teaching the methods- the scales techniques in music, the grammar and figures of speech in language is so helpful, because as well as not missing things out, the student is given a logical way of perceiving the subject which s/he can slot into her brain.
