For beginning students, I typically start with a combination of exercises from the Hal Leonard Rubank trumpet method book and crafted exercises learned from my studies with masterful instructors. We then work on age level appropriate solo repertoire and duets in which the student and I can play together. For older students we focus on a condensed embouchure development routine and then repertoire from the classical or jazz tradition based on the students interests. Read More

Music lessons can incorporate a variety of approaches depending on student preference and abilities. Some students love to read notation. I encourage these students to develop auditory skills through imitation games and improvisation. Other students play by ear and prefer to memorize all pieces.
