I start every lesson with the first lesson from my book called DRUM STUFF. It's what I call Basic Beat # 1 and it is the foundation on ANY song in 4/4 timing. In addition to the technical aspect of music, which can be intimidating to the beginner (which I can fully relate to!), we do extensive listening, partly for enjoyment, partly for analysis. Some students will want to be challenged, and I can take things very rapidly or focus on weaknesses and slow things down based on a student's skill level.
