My teaching experience dates back to my high school days. I taught private lessons to students at the middle school I attended so they would be prepared for what they'd have to do once they got to our level. As a senior in high school I aided the drumline at another local high school that had just opened. At the present time I am teaching musicians of all ages, ranging from the age of 6 to elderly adult. Before graduating from college, my passion for and knowledge of percussion created an opportunity for me to work for the North Forest Community All-Star Band Drumline and the North Forest High School Drumline. For Advanced students we learn to jam with other instrumentalists, and write our own drum beats. Just like a pianist would learn to compose a melody, my drum students can learn to compose their own drum beats like all great drummers do. And finally the most advanced student can learn to manage the rhythm of a song, not only the drums but also the other instruments. For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) From there, I start teaching the fundamental techniques of the instrument, and continually refer back to our song, for why the technique is important. Read More

I have a strong love to teach and dont mind teaching anyone who possesses the will to learn. My approach to teaching involves the individual student and their dominant learning preference. All lesson plans and materials are customized to each students learning strengths. I give students the opportunity to showcase what they already know about their craft and discipline. This data is then used to build and expand their foundation giving them the best chance of success. Read More
