For beginning students, whether they are children or adults, I begin instruction with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book for Clarinet. Once they have made their way through that book, I move onto the Rubank Beginner or Intermediate Method book, depending on how they have progressed. Around this time, I introduce my younger students to solo repertoire for clarinet. Typically in the first lesson, I assess the playing level of the student by asking them general questions about what they have done with music so far. From there it is easy for me to determine what to begin teaching first. For beginner students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. If the student has graduated from the beginner book, then I can proceed to intermediate or advanced methods which will include a combination of studies in pedagogy, repertoire, composers, etudes, ensemble work, and technical studies. It goes very gradually from lesson to lesson and kids have a chance to practice sight reading, practice their counting and gain rhythmic stability. I also add up some other tunes with piano accompaniment early on.
