As a clarinet instructor, I always strive for bringing a wide variety of different artistic, technical and clarinet related aspects into my teachings. I find it crucial to be able to identify a certain students strengths or weaknesses. When us, teachers, do that, we are not only helping an individual student, we also expand our capacity as artists; we learn new ways to fix certain problems in ones playing. Each lesson plan will be tailored to fit the student’s needs. Personally, I think one of the most important parts of teaching music is to give students a complete grasp of performing music by combining theory into their lesson plan to make a well-rounded musician. Their lesson plan will depend on their playing level: I will make sure they have fundamentals down for beginner students, but also adding solo repertoire and etudes to teach virtuosity and good performance practice for the advanced students. This might include taking a solo to contest, performing a recital, working on marching band or concert band music, or any other musical outlet. Based on the desires of the student, I can tailor my lessons to suite them personally. Guitar: for beginners, I typically turn to Mel Bays Method books. Once fundamentals are established, I want to learn what styles, bands, and artists the student likes.
