I believe music should be fun and challenging, so I make sure to be patient, encouraging, and passionate during lessons. I love to play with them (duets, etc.) whenever possible, so that the student may learn the joy of making music with others. In order to ensure that the student develops at a steady pace, I make sure to provide reasonable and regular goals or checkpoints that the student may work toward in their individual practice. This will depend on the level of the student and if they are in a band program in a school currently. I want to teach lessons as a supplement to what a student is learning in school, so I will work with the music and method book they already have. To me as a musician, teaching is as important and as necessary to our art as performing, and it is always a joy to share that art with students. I graduated from Kent State University in 2015 with my Bachelor of Science in Music Education, followed by a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance in 2019, and recently completed an Artist Diploma from UC-CCM. Although a bassoonist primarily, I've performed with orchestras such as the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, and the Warren Philharmonic, as well as bands like the Akron Symphonic Winds, the Cleveland Winds, and the Packard Band. I use many different methods, and I do not limit myself to the following list. I believe in a warm-up for all instruments, so each lesson will start with one (scales, long tones, etc.) For flute, I often start with either the book that comes with the rental book, old band books, etc. then I venture off into etude books, long tone books, and solos that promote individual development. Voice students will start with warm up exercises that help them find the placement of the voice and often, depending on why they are taking voice, there is a song that I pick and a song they pick. The one aspect of teaching I love the most is seeing other students develop a passion for it. Every students learns at their own pace, but this doesn't come without hard work. I encourage my students to work towards something, setting goals and gaining rewards when those goals are met. At the first lesson my students will tell me what they want to do with their music. From this information I can cater my teaching style to the needs of the student. Read More
