For beginning students, I usually start with John O'Reilly and Mark Williams' Accent on Achievement, which guides students through short, recognizable piece and duets. I will also introduce scales and exercises that help develop tone. As the students progress, I'll introduce solo repertoire to expose them to notes, rhythms, and techniques that will expand their skills beyond band repertoire. I am very much a goal-oriented and visual person, so I like to set clear goals for my students. I like to get to know my students personally and create a more open relationship. Some students learn much quicker than others and that is okay! But, I do always encourage my students to progress using proper techniques to prevent burnout and any injuries.
