I start beginning students with both a method book and a blank manuscript which we use to journal weekly. The method book is to instill a variety of fundamental skills while the manuscript (or materials saved and shared in google drive) is used to be a fun way of focussing and developing each student's individual trajectory. More advanced students may or may not require a method book per se but may be referenced to a variety of sources dependent on their current level of development. Read More

The most important thing to do as a teacher is find the right balance between fun and learning. When I teach, I make sure that students are enjoying their time in the lessons, because music is supposed to be fun, not a chore. Music is fun. The only reason to start learning an instrument is so you can have fun while learning, because you never stop learning. I will use a lot of practical examples so the student can see the principles we are learning and practicing being used in a live situation, i.e. other professional musician performances on video and/or audio. For the past 20 years, I've studied and performed with keyboards, guitars and woodwind instruments while exploring a very wide variety of music ranging from classical and rock to jazz and avant-garde. Expanding and sharing that knowledge with other people in a helpful and friendly manner is something that I consummately enjoy- especially if they're beginning where I once was. My education includes a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from DePaul University, and I've been working on my Music Education Certificate at UMSL since August 2014. Read More

I generally try to customize my instruction plan to meet what students are interested in. For the beginner, I like to incorporate Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for guitar and I reference Edward Ayola's Winning Rhythms quite a bit to assist in the hurdles of understanding tempo and rhythm. This provides students with the opportunity to get familiar with terminology, playing and rest positions, string sequence, tuning, finger and picking concepts, chord structure and much more.
