It is so rewarding seeing a student develop a passion for music! Intrinsic motivation is what my approach to teaching is founded on. My goal as a music educator is to give my students the tools to become truly independent so that they continue to grow and share their knowledge and passion with others. My style of teaching keeps in mind that each student is different, so a different approach is required for each student. Read More

I believe music should be fun and challenging, so I make sure to be patient, encouraging, and passionate during lessons. I love to play with them (duets, etc.) whenever possible, so that the student may learn the joy of making music with others. In order to ensure that the student develops at a steady pace, I make sure to provide reasonable and regular goals or checkpoints that the student may work toward in their individual practice. My methods vary depending on the background and interests of the student. Typically I shy away from tabs since I read music notation. I do recommend learning the basics of reading music for anyone who is thinking of self study in their short or long-term commitment to any instrument. I usually suggest to the parent or student, that they research method books for guitar basics. Many times, a family member or friend will have a method book that will be more than suffice if it is a standard method book. Read More

Part of my lesson times include teaching how to practice. However, I will always find a way to make the most out of an opportunity with a student. I'd rather spend time helping them learn how to express themselves with freedom and skill. When learning a specific task or skill, I use modeling in my teaching style. I will give examples the student examples they can imitate; however, I firmly believe that students should not just imitate but they should bring their own light to their music! Read More

Every student comes at a different level, no matter what age they are. For younger students who are just beginning, I feel like it is my job to first and foremost get them excited about playing the drums. I find it to be difficult to teach anything if the student dimply does not want to be there because they do not have a good relationship with the instrument. Once I feel the student is excited and ready, I usually introduce the "Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer." This book is important for building skills in reading music, ear training, and general funky rhythms! Read More
