When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. I have a great breadth and depth of experience with instrumental music education. Clarinet has been my primary performance instrument, but I have found over the years that the techniques that I use to teach clarinet are easily and successfully transferable to the other instruments that I teach. Besides the clarinet, I also teach saxophone, guitar, violin and piano throughout the Colorado Springs area. It is my job to get to know the student and find positive ways to help them develop their musical skills. I try to tailor the lesson to meet the students needs. The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student.
