For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Books. Suzuki encourages ear training, which is only part of what I like to teach. Sight reading is a very important skill to have, and I use other books and materials to ensure sight reading is learned. I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for a recital performance, as well as their skill level. Students do not progress or progress very slowly when they do not have a desire to do so. Therefore, the students interests and desires are always paramount. Goals are set by the student, and together we make a plan to achieve those goals. I see myself not only as a teacher, but also a mentor. I began teaching professionally in the Bay Area about 30 years ago. I have taught in a variety of settings includings classes, group lessons, in music stores, for school districts, at students' homes and in my own private studio. Developing proper techniques, rhythm, and focusing on problem areas in regular practice sessions are important points I help students work through.
