For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as I believe it the most comprehensive lesson guide for fundamentals. I do also on occasion utilize the Suzuki method for my string students in addition to EE. Every lesson begins with tuning and scales which helps train the ear and prepare students for the lesson at hand. From there we will go through the pieces as written. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals, we will begin to introducing solo pieces such as etudes and other popular music they may be into to keep them engaged. Read More

It depends! Everyone is different and Melissa’s goal is to tailor each student’s lesson depending on what work’s for the student, learning retention, and most important, having passion. Every student is unique so I adjust my teaching style and methods/music taught to the needs of the student. I love the Suzuki Method for young students and adults alike. But I also refer to several fiddle methods including Craig Duncan's books, "American Fiddle Method" and "Kid Fiddle" for students who wish to learn fiddle tunes. I use the I Can Read Music books by Joanne Martin for teaching note reading. Read More

All lesson plans are centered around each individual student, their interests, and skill level. All students will learn different etudes that foster technical development and support their solo repertoire. For students that are less experienced they will work out of the Essentials for Strings series. Other early string series books can be considered if already purchased by the student. More advanced students will use the Kreutzer etudes. Beginning to Intermediate students will typically choose solo repertoire from the Suzuki series, but are welcome to suggest anything they want to learn. Read More

Goals are an essential part of teaching. Students need something to work toward and I want those goals to be realistic and motivate the student to work towards them. Having a basic outline of a lesson plan is important and so is the flexibility to adjust it to fit the individual needs of the student. My goal is not to have the best playing students, but to have students with the most growth in their own abilities. Read More
