For my beginning students, I will typically teach out of the Sound Innovations methods books and incorporate certain lessons from other method books as well. After a foundation has been established, I will introduce solo repertoire and begin to work toward recitals and local competitions. I introduce concepts from a variety of composers, styles, and periods, but I also want to encourage the child's love for music so I take into account what things they have heard and possibly want to learn. My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. When the student can successfully play a passage correctly then the work turns into fun music making. Read More

For beginning students on violin we start with many techniques found in the Suzuki method. From there, we jump into different styles of music while still focusing on developing solid technical foundations for the student. I would much rather have a student who practices daily for 15 minutes then a student who does not practice except for the day before their lesson for two hours. Read More

My style is light and cheery - I make the kids feel important and I acknowledge their progress regularly. I am not a knuckle-rapping teacher. Discipline comes naturally out of a love of learning and I notice when they are practicing and let them know and that induces more and continuous practicing. I don't guilt-trip them if they don't - I use a "try to do more or better this week" approach if they have a low practice amount last week! Read More

I want to give my student the experience of success from the start. With an appropriate printed resource, and audio recordings to listen to, they are equipped with the materials for self-study from the start. During the lesson itself, the student would be singing or playing at least half of the time. During this current stay-at-home lifestyle, I propose having lessons over Zoom. I would like to work toward a performance goal, such as playing at a recital, or playing in an ensemble. Read More
