For beginning students, I start with the Douglas Steensland Flute Student books. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on memorization of scales in addition to working out of Taffanel and Gaubert's 17 Daily Exercises, etude books (i.e., Melodious and Progressive series), and standard flute repertoire. My goal as a teacher is to help the students improve their overall musicianship, while also addressing each students personal goals. My students are taught using The European Method which was developed to train students in the classical principles of musical pedagogy. The teaching method focuses on developing a strong ear for music in the students along with concrete musical abilities based on memory, attention, and practice. I have recently again started playing after many years. I have played in a the pit band at the Count Basie Theater for Jesus Christ Superstar, and Into the Woods for a Wagner College and Brookdale Community College productions. I have been sitting in on local jam sessions with very favorable feedback. I played at a performance at Brookdale Community College with a group, Hot Air. Enjoyment, hearing pitch and rhythm by vocalizing, and developing a register appropriate and flexible embrochure, and using harmonics to tone match are some of the techniques and strategies I would emphasize for flute specific instruction. I am a a new full-time educator, but I have also taught numerous private lessons. Since graduating, I have had 2 long-term substitute positions and I am currently working as a music teacher at a primary school in Lancaster County. I have taught beginning to intermediate piano, beginning ukulele, and advanced flute, clarinet, and saxophone.
