I'm an enthusiastic, energetic, kind and dedicated music instructor. As passionate as I am about music, I am even more so about the students I teach. I graduated from the University of Connnecticut, Storrs, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1972, and a Master of Music degree, with a concentration in Piano Pedagogy in 1980. As an undergraduate my major instruments were piano and trombone. I was in the UConn Marching Band and had the great fortune to perform on my trombone in Europe during the 1970 Marching Band Tour. I start all my beginners with a strong set of fundamental practices, from breathing techniques and games to lip slurs and articulations. I find that the best way to motivate a student to practice and learn is to play music that they know. I teach beginning and intermediate students out of the Walter Beeler method, which provides a good progression of theory along with recognizable music. I like to finish lessons working on pop music or video game songs. Read More

My style is focused but fun! I ask my students to practice every day. While this may sound daunting, it's really the only way to make progress in music. My students know that I have many different ways to teach something, and I never give up! When a student struggles with a concept or technique, I love to dive into the nitty gritty of the situation until we've found a solution. Read More

The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). I do focus on things in order though. If you don't know your fundamentals, then that's where we start no matter what. After learning fundamentals, however, we can begin to pick and choose the battles and wars. Read More
