Instruments: Trumpet, Music, Keyboard
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, where I taught middle schoolers and beginners privately. Now, I do the same, as well as high school and advanced players. I've been consistently teaching students all over for the past 6 years and I encourage regular practice and focus on fundamentals and playing at a high level of musicality even when first starting. I've found that using both the classical and modern approach can help a lot in encouraging students to play and motivate them to learn. Read More

I graduated in 1981 from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Trombone Performance. I love how music is more than notes on a page. They're expressions of oneself. Knowing how to interpret these notes is very important to learning the fundamentals of music. Performing all types of music from orchestral, jazz, big band and gospel, I have learned that each style has the same note but they need to interpreted differently. Read More

Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and jazz music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the trumpet and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
For beginning students who are picking up their instrument for the first time, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. These introductory books are the ones I first learned from, and feature a wide variety of musical styles to give students an idea of the breadth of possibilities on their instrument. Once the student has a firm understanding of the basics of the instrument, or with students who have prior playing experience, I will turn to more standard method and technique books, such as Arban's Conservatory Methods or Clarke's Technical Studies.
