I adjust my private instruction based on student interests- if a student is into composing or using programs like finale or garageband, we construct lesson content around these interests. There's always the inclusion of music theory, at all levels of experience, because I feel that it is necessary for students to understand how the music is created and why in order to become better performers and musicians. I never let a student let a bad day get in the way of having a productive lesson- I like to touch base on how they're doing, and if things aren't going so well, we will always be able to find something positive that's going on in the lesson. My method of instruction is individualized to both a student's goals and their unique interests or aptitudes. Together, I work with a student to figure out what they intend to achieve with their music and how to get there, while building musical skills (such as ear training, rhythm, and phrasing) and lifelong skills (such as discipline, focus, and self esteem). It is the theory that one needs to learn in order to progress to a level a student wishes at attain. Think of if you were asked, "Can you write me a sentence"? but you didn't know the alphabet, how would you write the sentence? It would be difficult or, impossible to do so without the knowledge of using letters to convey the message. In the same way, without theory of music, one finds one stranded in their development and in need of a musical transfusion. Read More
