I will always try, in each lesson, to assign just the correct amount of material to be practiced for the next lesson. Sometimes, I will note that items are optional. Optional items should be worked on, if the prior material is all pretty well in hand. If the assigned material altogether is more than can be handled before the next scheduled lesson, the student should work hard on what he/she can in the available time. 6. Read More

I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. Also with little children I work into the lesson movement thru pitch high and low and show SOUND thru spatial relationships. Read More

My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form.
