I love to have fun in my lessons. No single student understands the same thing the same way so I take the time to listen/understand them as a person and as a musician. While it would be wonderful if all of my students became virtuosi musicians, I understand that sometimes math class may be at the forefront of their attention. That said, practice is still required. Like a doctor, I prescribe solutions to students to help them achieve their goals and will do everything I can to help them to succeed but if they dont take the remedy, success is can be quite slow. In my lessons, I value both exploring self expression and introducing new concrete information in each lesson. Self expression can manifest in picking songs we learn, learning how to improvise, exploring dynamics and tone quality, song writing, and countless other ways! Play and performance are very important to the learning process and are great ways to explore the skills my students acquire. I always encourage my students to seek out performance opportunities, the world needs your voice! Read More

I firmly believe that experiencing music and being inquisitive are invaluable to learning how to play music. Studying music is not just about learning the material and regurgitating it, but discovering why a moment of music is cool and examining what about that moment makes it hit you in the right spot. I will be the guide that the student needs when he or she does not know where to go with his or her studies, but I want to encourage students to bring in music they want to learn, or discuss music that they think is cool and use that as a jumping off point into our lessons. For beginning musicians and children, I find it is best to start with the fundamentals: an introduction to music vocabulary. introducing major scales, common time signatures, and basic rhythms. from there, we'll move on to reading sheet music and performing simple rhythms, melodies, and phrases. One of my go-to resources for this is the standard of excellence book 1. For adults or experienced musicians, we'll take a different approach. we'll start by diving into some of their own favorite tunes. Read More
