I can't stress enough how important practice is. That being said, I do not encourage students to practice material that does not contribute to their goals and interests. That is why I sit down with students and them write out their own practice schedule. The topics on the schedule should relate they're interested in playing. And yes not every topic will be fun, but with time and patience the students will see the benefit in their playing. Read More

My style is patient and encouraging. For beginning students I use Mel Bay Guitar Book 1 for standard notation reading along with my book Fret Board Explorers which has finger strengthening drills, and various picking exercises. Along the way I introduce basic chords teaching the correct fingering. In addition to that I introduce scales, arpeggios and chord inversions. As the student progresses we move toward each students favorite music. I am versatile, i can teach classical, folk, rock and blues. Read More

My teaching style is quite formal, as I tend to enjoy conveying my methods, in addition to my playing style in a dignified, yet light and friendly manner. I take from the teachings of my past teachers, and respected players, such as Andy Goessling, Tony Trischka, Dino Govoni, and George Garzone. I like to encourage my students to ask questions, even going so far as to tell them "the dumbest question is the one left unasked." I truly believe in pushing my students to be their very best, and trying to best suit my instruction to them as people. Read More

Ever since I was a child I had wanted to be a teacher. When I got to Central Piedmont Community College I focused on music education because I knew I wanted to teach music theory in college. After transferring to Wingate University I began studying choral music education because I was fascinated byhow the voice works and blends with other voices in a choir situation. I have had the opportunity to study rock bass, jazz bass, classical guitar, piano, and even private voice lessons from private lessons all the way up through college level lessons and these lessons have given me such a drive and passion for not only music, but music education. Seeing students excel at their instrument of choice is most rewarding. My goal is to help my students understand music so deeply that they can play any instrument they want. They need to know two things about their instrument. 1.How the instrument is tuned. 2. How to get sound out of the instrument. Mistakes are a prerequisite for learning. They have to be made in order to learn what is correct. I teach my students to practice like they are performing. Read More
