From listening to and seeing my student play, I can gauge his/her skill level in timekeeping, rhythmic phrasing, melodic phrasing, tone, musical interest, and hand technique. For beginning students I make sure we know every warm up exercise and stretching exercises for the fingers after explaining the importance of rehearsing properly. We will start getting familiarized with a couple circles until the student fluently knows how to accompany every chord. After we are going to learn scales so they also familiarized with licks and comp. For beginner students, it’s often a little difficult to be able to maneuver around the bass or guitar when you haven’t first held one before. So, it can be a bit tricky in the beginning to get your hands working the right way, and pacing yourself through the adaptation of your hand to the neck of either instrument is essential. For children and beginning studetns, I will typically start in a level one method book. This allows us to get acquainted with the instrument and some terminology that may be a bit foriegn for some students. This also provides an opportunity to learn how to read basic notes and chords which will highly accelerate our learning process.
