I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Colorado; my Master’s degree in music from Colorado State University and my Doctorate in Orchestra conducting from the University of South Carolina. I am a native of Pueblo, CO and grew up playing cello, first in the Pueblo Youth Symphony and latter with the Pueblo Symphony, Mozart Chamber Orchestra and Pueblo Jazz Orchestra. My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. Other than what would be the general consensus of the standard cello repertoire, and a couple of technique books which I find to be incredibly useful with one area of pedagogy or another, I do not follow any of the current methods widely available to string players. It is my firm belief that it is the job of the teacher to be both adequately well versed and acutely attentive to each individual students' strengths, flaws, and the overall nuances of their playing style to be able to recommend appropriate literature, exercises, and music that is best suited for the student.
