I generally will start off students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. I generally will start off on Classical music, but if the student has a request I will help them work on that song unless I know that their skill level isn't at the point where they can perform that song. My first teaching experience comes from the high school years. My teacher asked me to cover him for a couple weeks with beginner students (6-9 years old kids). Then when I graduated from high school and started my Bachelors, I began to work as a part-time teacher. After that, while earning my Master's, I began a teaching assistantship. Read More
Instruments: Cello
I have been teaching cello since high school, when I already had 15 years of experience playing the cello. I have taught consistently since then and along the way completed all of the units of Suzuki teacher training. I have studied how to teach with the renowned trainers David Evenchick, Jean Dexter, Pamela Devenport, Carey Cheney, and Avi Friedlander. I continue to study with other teacher trainers whenever possible to continue learning how to teach. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or the Suzuki method. Once the student begins to grasp the fundamentals I slowly begin introducing solo repertoire. One of my main focuses for a beginning student is to get them playing a familiar piece very soon from when they start. For adults I use a similar method but I move a little faster. I have found in my years of teaching that it is even more crucial for and adult to play even a simple song soon after beginning. Read More

For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!) For young intermediate to advanced players, the philosophy of building one's repertoire continues with the added focus on musical understanding. Read More
