In the first lessons, I explain the the beginner students the basic functionality of the instruments, the proper way to hold the instruments, how to produce a clear sound from the instruments and a Major scale ascending and descending, the one from which the first lessons or the next lessons is written. My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. I love teaching private string lessons from a classical approach. I use the Essential Elements method books along with solo literature from the Suzuki books. My experienced students study 3 octave scales, etudes and contrasting solo literature chosen to meet their specific level. In addition to traditional technique building and repertoire, I love to incorporate music the students are interested in. I often include Disney music, pop tunes, worship music, or music specifically requested by the student. Read More
