We will work on necessary fundamentals to build the students embouchure, as well develop the students technique and skills no matter the level. My saying is to be better than your yesterday. For beginning woodwind students, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever the student's school band book is. Once the student knows how to read music and can play enough notes, I like to introduce scales. This provides a good foundation for moving on to duets and solo pieces, which are more enjoyable to play. Once the student has finished the first Essential Elements book, I like to move on to the Rubank books. Read More

I have a very classical approach to teaching. This means that I focus on mastery learning. I don't move a student to the next level without first seeing mastery of the skill being taught. I believe it is important that each student progress at their own pace, but I also believe in pushing towards difficult, but realistic goals. I make an effort to acknowledge their accomplishments and fostering an eagerness to learn even on the days were learning is hard. Read More

I believe that one of the most important things a musician can do is to find and develop their own voice on their instrument. Listening to the greats like Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Jimi Hendrix, and Chick Corea illustrate how a unique voice can manifest itself and make the music so much more powerful.
