While in Las Vegas I taught not only high school and middle school students but was the teacher for UNLV's non music major saxophonists as well. In 2017 I was one of the judges for the Clark County (Nevada) Honor Bands. With beginning students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as I feel those have the most fundamental understanding of music. If there is not a Hal Leonard book on the students instrument of choice, I start them out with learning to read music, and proper formation and understanding of chords and harmony. As the children grow, we can dig into the respected teachings of the Rubank method, in addition to proper pieces of any genre. Read More

There are many acceptable method books for beginning students, however, I have found that if a student gets relatively comfortable on their instrument before trying to decipher a grand staff, they seem to enjoy the learning experience more. The hardest part of teaching music, in my opinion, is the educational content that isn't in a method book. Finding someone who can play your instrument better than you can often be more inspirational than finding a new piece that is slightly out of your comfort zone or using a method book that, at the end of the day, is supposed to help a student reach the ability level of the person the student aspires to be. For beginning students who are children I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Most schools use this book and I feel its a great beginning method. I start them working on tone and ear training. There is no one size fits all learning companion so I really like to see what the students interests are and find what really works for them.
