I have many years of experience playing at in my church choir as well. As a result of which I have played professionally at numerous weddings and other similar events. I take a personal approach to the students aspirations. The starting point for all students is, "What music do you enjoy?" This gives me a sense of what they are listening to and maybe even what they would like to sound like. I then sculp a curriculum based on the ability of the student and his/her wants and needs. I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
