I am a fully-certified music educator of over 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. As for my formal education, I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010). For the beginning string player I like to start with a Hal Leonard method book to communicate and help string players master the basics. Once the student has progressed I will begin some solo repertoire from varying genres. I find it is always helpful to allow students to play music that they enjoy - experiencing a range of both popular and classical pieces to broaden their horizons. I encourage my students to do a lot of listening as a part of their practice. Read More

I like to pull ideas from different schools of thought. I would much rather paint a canvas with many colors than just a few. Some schools you may be familiar with are Suzuki, Czerny, Galamian, Flesch, Hanon, Mayron Cole, and many others. I tailor my lessons to fit the current needs of every student. This may be the use of one main school or a mixture of all depending on the technical and artistic needs of the student. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time. I encourage the student to see it , believe it and achieve all goals that can be set out to be accomplished. Practice on a daily basis is very necessary when gaining the passion for the chosen instrument. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. In my opinion, it is very important that the teacher understand each student's motivation for studying music. Hearing, and playing along with, recordings of lesson material will very much benefit intonation (tuning) and rhythm. For that reason, the Hal Leonard method books are very good; and the Suzuki books are excellent for repertoire, when the student has established a foundation. Although studying music literature is emphasized, lessons will usual consist of scales and arpeggios, technical studies, and repertoire. Read More
