As a teacher my goal is to build up a student's core knowledge and skills to create a confident performer who is competent in music. The student's level and goals determine what exactly I include in my lessons. I find a good music theory core is important not only for classical musicians but especially for those wishing to learn how to improvise and play by ear. For this reason I make it a little part of each lesson, with focus devoted to practical applications for the instrument being learned. Read More

For younger piano students and beginners, I prefer to start them out on the Faber and Faber "Piano Adventures" method series. This series tends to be inexpensive, touches on classical exerpts while teaching students proper techniques, and builds on concepts in a way that solidifies the information in a student's brain. For string students, I focus on chords, beginning with the most simple and continuing with For older students (teenagers and adults) I assess what the student is interested in learning, and steer my instruction toward their goals. Everyone has the capacity to be a musician...therefore, I teach students of all ages and include all cultures (all styles and musical genres). No one is a 'beginner' when it comes to recognizing great music, so I strive to create musicians who can reach their own goals...thus, building independence is the key: My job is done when my students can do what I do without needing me! For more experienced students, I assess your present skills upon our first lesson via a variety of repertoire so as to 'diagnose' what areas you need improvement on musically speaking. Read More

Whichever the case may be, I see lessons as an opportunity to open a window into creativity and expression. Depending upon the age of the student, my approach is very different. For students of ages 5-12, I evaluate their learning processes and their comfort in analyzing patterns and symbols. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
