Always based on the student's individual needs and likes/dislikes. When teaching a lone student, one has to make a judgment call based on how this person learns, behaves, and interacts with music. For piano, I have used Hal Leonard books and John Thompson, and for the classical guitar, I have used Mel Bay and a couple of others. I find that metaphors using familiar things and processes, like the laws of nature and physics we see everyday, can help students grasp concepts that require marrying physical movements with mental flexibility. Perhaps we're discussing articulations and you're having trouble understanding stylistically how to approach and execute staccato with legato over it.
