For my youngest students I start with a method book as I think the structure and step by step progress are very helpful. For teens and adults book recommendations are based on each students needs. I let the students guide me with the kinds of music they will really enjoy playing, but I will use the music they like to teach theory, song writing, and other aspects of music. With this in mind I have every student choose something they wish to be able to do (i.e. play like specific performers, a style they enjoy, or just to relax). We then set milestone markers that include everything they need to know, such as technique, reading, musicality, etiquette, and performance. I enjoy using "Solo Guitar Playing" as a preferred book for both beginners and intermediate students.
