Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Colombia, 5 Semesters of Music Universidad El Bosque de Colombia, 3 semesters of music Academia Cristancho de Colombia, Harmony and Improvisation Diploma
I've been part of Mauricio & Palo de Agua band in Colombia (2 Latin Grammy award nominated, signed with EMI Music, won award Sigla de Oro in Milano Italia, several latin-central-north American tours, european tours. I've made 7 cruiseship contracts as a professional musician, all over the Oceania Including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and so on.
I'm a experienced and passionate musician, who has make his living both in the fields of teaching and having the whole band experience (recording, touring, writing). I'm looking forward to sharing my musical adventures and experiences by teaching you chords, improvisation, song writing, musical appreciation and more. My idea is to teach you according to your musical taste, making the lessons dynamic and fun at the same time. In my musical experience, I've been honored twice with nominations to the Latin grammy award, and have been lucky to play in more or less 25 different countries all over the world.
My experience as a teacher started almost 20 years ago in Colombia, country where I was born and raised. I started by giving private lessons, and at some point I was a part time teacher in the High School i've graduated from. Since i started my lessons, at least 30 students have been taking lessons with me, and actually 4 of them are now a days professional musicians who make a living out of music. Most of them are not professionals, but have their own bands and musical projects. Education is a very important part in my life, and I'm gonna keep teaching as long as I can, since i'm really concerned about the role of education in making of this a better place.
Since I believe that every human being has their own specific weaknesses and abilities, I started by getting to know the person I'm working with. I want to know his musical background, what are their interests and goals, and getting to know that, We start with the basics to build a really good sound instead of, for instance a lot of speed. I think every thing has to come at its right moment, and if you have strong foundations you will be able to do anything on your instrument. So I will ask you which music do you like, and starting from there, I'm gonna teach you technique through the music you actually love. That's my goal, to make my students develop passion for the instrument and for music in general.
I think my teaching style is getting to really know what my students want, knowing their sensitivity, musical taste, goals and previous lessons or ways to learn what they already know. I'm very focused on improve improvisation skills, as well as harmony and song writing skills. I will always try to maintain the interest of my students by showing them new music, by jamming along with them (that's a must in my lessons), so we both are gonna be really close musically, and therefore lessons will be more dynamic and fun.
