My name is Seth and I been working in the field of percussion for 18 years. My two degrees are in the field of music technology. Basically I look to combine music and technology together, which I use this method in my lessons. The reason I love percussion so much is the fact that you can turn anything you can imagine into a drum. With that mentality I can turn trash cans, paint cans, tables, virtually anything I want into a drum. I have a vast amount of knowledge in percussion as I have played instruments from around the world from Africa, China, and Indonesia just to name a few. Music is my life, and throughout my career I have learned that as an artist it is my job to share my craft with the world through my performances, and teaching.
My experience teaching started back in high school when I had to teach other students how to play percussion instruments in marching band about 10 years ago. I would teach them how to play snare drum, quads, bass drums, and mallet instruments. In my second year of college I would teach some students how to work in electronic music. I didn't really start doing private lessons, but group work. That changed 2 years ago when some neighbor kids asked me to teach them how to play snare drum. I found it very rewarding handing down my knowledge to these students. ts rewarding to me seeing that the student is smiling and having fun learning music. I also am teaching the percussionists at a local middle school. The music program got cut a few years back and they finally got it back up again and I volunteer my time to help the students learn percussion.
I teach from a percussion manual that I have developed from my own experiences with percussion. The manual is designed to focus on the fundamentals that all percussionists must know to be successful. The student will start off on snare drum as that is where the student will learn all their fundamentals. As time goes on I will introduce them to new percussion instruments to further increase their background in percussion. A strong percussionists should be able to play many different instruments, and it is my goal to make them well rounded musicians. Some instruments the students may want to learn extensively and others they may choose they rather not learn. So I will adjust the lessons to the students interests so they are having fun. Music is all about expressing yourself and having fun.
I want my students to develop a passion for percussion. Every student will learn at their own pace, and its important not to rush the student. One thing I find very important in music is that a musician needs to feel confident in what they are playing. So I always encourage my students so that they build up their confidence in their playing. The lessons always must be positive so that the student develops into a stronger musician. So knowing the students likes and interests will also help me develop a lesson plan that they will enjoy. If the student is not having fun then that means the lesson plan needs to be changed. Another thing I aim for my students is I want them to develop into smart musicians. I want them to think about music, and approach not from just one angle but from many different angles. This will help the student apart from other musicians when it comes to auditions. If everyone learns exactly the same methods, and thinks the same exact approaches they become robots. Music is about expressing yourself, and your ideas. I want my students to be expressive about how they are playing. I also include technology in my lessons. I will record the lessons and then at the end of the day post them in my drop box. That way the student can listen to the lesson for their own references. I also will be posting instructional videos for the students. The students may use these videos to help develop their technique, and it they help inform the student how to approach their practice methods.
