City college of New York
1998 performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. 20010 entered the New York jazz academy 2010 studied at the New York drum collective
I studied with my Dad who played for Duke Ellington. I went to city college in NY where I learned much about jazz history. I've played with the Ellington Band and learned much about music. I am very passionate about drums and started teaching about 4years ago and I have helped many students get to where they want to get on their instrument. I have also studied out of Houston Texas where I've worked with musicians like Tweed Smith from the band War. I've also worked with Robert Saunders who is a fixture on the Houston Jazz Sceene.
I've had great teaching experiences since I've been teaching. I teach students the basics and then work on their own music. This keeps the student interested, keeping them wanting to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. I also teach music reading which helps the student to learn how to see music on the page. I have three steps to success. 1) drum rudiments, we focus on the rudiments which gives the student a better understanding on how to play the drums. 2) I focus on reading which give the student more confidence when playing 3) I focus on ear training which helps the student to play music that is heard while giving the student a better understanding on how to play with a group
I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. For older advanced students I give a listening test to see where they are as a student then I teach accordingly. I have many drum books that teach Latin grooves and jazz improvisation. I find out what the student wants to learn then I figure out a game plan to give it to them
I love teaching so I want my students to have the same love for learning. I convey this to the student by only giving the student what they can handle. I keep it challenging but also fun. I do this by letting the student choose their own music. I always add something fun into each lesson which keeps each student interested. I teach out of many books that give the student knowledge and confidence to play. We will work on many different grooves and fills. I Taylor my lessons to what the student needs to be successful
