2018 - Premiered multiple original compositions with many ensembles including the award-winning OSU Trombone Octet
I'm a passionate composer and performer who loves working with students to develop an individual appreciation for music, while focusing on growing as a player. I'm currently studying Music Performance with a Jazz minor at Oklahoma State University under the instruction of Paul Compton. Because I spend a lot of time composing, I have a deep knowledge of music theory that I can use to not only explain concepts to students, but give them a deeper understanding of what is actually happening. I desperately want my students to have a deep love for music, and I believe I can do that by changing their perspective about what they're listening to. I'm very passionate about allowing my students to enjoy their music-making!
My training has always been performance-focused, but I'm a believer that you cannot teach what you don't know how to do yourself. I've spent lots of time absorbing information about all different aspects of performing and composing, and because of that I'm now in a great position to share what's worked for me, and what else could work for people of different learning styles. I've premiered multiple pieces, and have more premieres lined up for later this year. One being in Argentina! I have lots of experience with music as a whole, and would love to use that experience to help students.
I typically begin with fundamentals to get an understanding for what areas of a student's playing need to be addressed. I'll try to correct future problems that are usually caused from poor fundamentals. Following this, we'll take a look at Bordogni etudes to see the student's understanding of time and rhythm. Once I have a good idea of where the student is at, I'll guide the student through the different methods of addressing a problem head on. I'll always have something for my students to practice, and try to give my students as much information they need.
My ultimate goal is to guide a student towards efficient and fulfilling practicing. Many students give up simply because they don't know how to practice, but I hope to show them how easy it is to enjoy your practicing. Once a student understands and can see the fruits of their labor, it's very easy for them to push themselves. I want to give a student the opportunity to do that, but I can't force them to practice. I can only teach and encourage them how to use the tools available to them. I really want to develop a student's independence as a musician. When I was younger, I was never told how to properly practice however I had a desire to keep practicing. I want to help students develop their passion for music so they can see it in a new light!
