My greatest passion is music and teaching. I hold two degrees in Music (AA, and BM, piano performance), and I am currently pursuing a MM in Piano Performance at Cleveland State University. I have performed in various venues in Texas. I have a strong background in both solo and collaborative performance.
I began teaching as a junior in high school and have maintained a private studio in Texas for the past 6-1/2 years. I have taught beginning through advanced level students. I like to encourage creativity in the studio; I don't push every student to have the same musical experiences. With a world of performance opportunities available (festivals, competitions, recitals) I strongly encourage students to perform. I emphasize a regular practice routine for all of my studio. I encourage students to find music that they want to learn. I love sharing my passion for music with students and seeing the next generation of musicians grow! I remain active as a performer, because I feel that students learn best when they see teachers do. I always encourage my students to come to my recitals, so that they know I can do what I ask them to do!
I tailor my method selection to suit the needs of the student. With so many wonderful methods out there, what it comes down to is what will help the student learn the most! I highly emphasize Music Theory and Aural Skills; I believe that students should understand what they are playing. This understanding leads to more accurate performances and more solid memorization skills. I try to keep the student's musical education moving forward steadily at whatever pace the student learns best. I like to use a variety of activities to help students enjoy lessons.
I love seeing my students' pride as they are successful in music. With the student, I work to establish short- and long-term goals and I try to provide incentive for meeting these goals. I have a prize box from which the student can pick something (Small candies, pencils, pens, stickers, bubbles, etc.) when they achieve a short-term goal (i.e. learn 5 songs in February, or something similar). When a student achieves a long-term goal (a specific festival rating, completing a level in their method, etc) I have gift cards that they choose from. My students' success is my #1 priority!
