Hello! I'm a classically trained musician who's seen all the ups and downs that come with learning a new instrument, mastering it, and keeping it around just for fun. Having been both an adult and childhood learner, I focus on understanding my students' goals and giving them the tools they need to achieve them. Eventually, I want my students to have the confidence to practice on their own and develop their own musical ideas. Whether you're looking to prepare for college and orchestral auditions, get into the local honor band, or get back into flute as a hobby, I'm here to help you do just that!
I started teaching flute lessons to my friends in high school from my parents' basement in 2009. Since then, I've gone on to college and have maintained a studio throughout that time. As a teaching assistant, I also taught college courses at the University of Northern Iowa for music education students and undergraduate flute students. In addition to private lessons, I was a Music Together teacher for early childhood music, and worked as an instrument repair technician. My graduate studies were in flute and music therapy, which gave me experience with people who function at all different levels. Now, I teach online both nationally and internationally, and spend my days as a full-time fife musician with the US Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps.
Beginning students will start with tone and basic theory studies from the Trevor Wye Series. We then go on to learning some easy standards. For more experienced students, you'll choose an etude book, study tone from Moyse's "De La Sonorite", and really hone your scales and arpeggios from Taffanel and Gaubert's 24 Daily Studies. From there, each student will have individualized practice routine based on their needs. We will set your end goal and base all of our studies on attaining that. If you have trouble coming up with a specific goal, don't worry! We will work together to find something you'll like.
If you're learning music one thing I already know about you is that you're creative! As creative and free-thinking artists, I expect my students to explore the flute world and come to me with ideas. Even if you don't know exactly which piece you want to play, we can work together to find something that lets you express your style. All fundamental work is geared toward developing your unique sound and that just takes consistency. What you put into your studies is what you get out of it so I really want you to get the most!
