2020 - Superior rating at Concert Band Assessment
I am a middle school band director that has over 20 years experience. I love sharing my love of music. I graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Education. I also have a Masters of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Instrumental/Choral Education. Currently I teach beginning band, intermediate band, advanced band, jazz band, and beginning chorus at a local middle school. I also help with a local high school marching band. Love passing on my knowledge to others.
I began teaching privately during high school. I would teach local middle school students. I have taught privately off and on since then. I encourage regular practice at home on a consistent schedule. I work with whichever book the students classroom teacher uses and also supplement my own pieces. I encourage students to have a say in their own learning by picking music they like that will still be educational. I also encourage students to perform for their parents, grandparents, and friends to get used to being on stage.
For my own beginner students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My more advanced students learn scales, arpeggios, chords, etc. I also help them pick solo repertoire to perform.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I connect with students by getting to know them outside of their music. Knowing their likes and dislikes helps make that connection.
