Overview:
I earned my Bachelors of Arts degree in music education from Florida Atlantic University and has been teaching and performing ever since. As a licensed Florida educator I have taught many grade levels from Pre-K through 12th grade. Outside the public school system, I teach piano and voice students of all ages providing a comprehensive and fun learning environment where children and adults get to explore the wonderful world of music. In addition, I am a certified Music Together Teacher working in Boulder, Colorado As a performer I have had the opportunity to sing with the William Paterson University Concert Choir, The William Paterson Chamber Singers, The FAU Women’s Choir, The FAU Honors Choir, The South Florida Master Chorale, and is in the process of auditioning for choirs in the Boulder Area. I have studied voice with Nan Guptill Crain (William Paterson University), Kristin Jones (Florida Atlantic University) and Dr. Sandra McClain (Florida Atlantic University) and has studied piano with Prof. Ronaldo Garcia (William Paterson University) and attended Piano pedagogy workshops taught by Prof. Judith Burganger (Florida Atlantic University).
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to college where I tutored other university students in Ear Training/Sight Singing and Music Theory. I began teaching private lessons about 7 years ago in Florida while I was pursuing my degree in Music Education. I have maintained a voice and piano student consisting of 50 students. From a young age I have always had an interest in teaching and have developed and nurtured the skills necessary to be a successful teacher for close to 15 years. I love seeing my students overcome difficulties in their learning and enjoy watching them grow as musicians and people.
METHODS USED
Every student is assigned music. Beginning students often start in lesson books. I use the Bastien book series for my youngest students, Alfred books for ages 6-11, and Bastien Books for students older. As students grow and become more advanced I also assign solo pieces from other sources to supplement a students progress. I tailor every lesson to fit a students particular strengths and weaknesses and no two lessons are ever the same. For all levels I try to make the lessons fun and interesting.
LESSON STYLE
I love seeing students grow as musicans. There is no greater reward for a teacher then to see her students develop new skills, master technique, and become independent and educated young musicans. As a teacher I feel that it is extremely important that all my students be able to read music. My students not only read the notes, but read and understand symbols in their music. Students learn music theory, rhythm reading, sight reading, and gain knowledge in the area of music history providing a comprehensive musical experience. In my studio, we celebrate all accomplishments from completing homework, tackling a difficult piece, or finishing a lesson book.
