Overview:
I am a passionate and determined instructor who loves music and its culture. I believe Music builds character and self esteem. It creates Magic like no other! I love sharing my love for music and I love it even more while connecting with the youth. I have been playing piano for 19 years. I also have been playing the Clarinet for 16 years. I graduated from Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a a concentration of Clarinet. I have had the opportunity to play at Harmony hall along with other significant places. I also was a member of the Fort Washington Symphonic Winds band in Oxon Hills MD.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to college. I was a student teacher as well as a mentor. When i graduated college I began teaching my own private lessons for piano and have been for almost 3 years in student homes. I start from 5 years old, all the way up to adults. For my younger students (5 year olds) I encourage to practice everyday for 15-20 min as it helps memory and passion for their instrument. For my older students up to adults, I encourage students to practice for a hour everyday. This also helps with memory, passion, and progress. In piano I love to teach jazz, gospel, musicals, and classical. It brings diversity to the class and more fun! I encourage recitals, showcases, and holiday performances to stay in touch with everyday culture and Music. Also to just showcase what our students have been working hard for all year. Though Piano is my main instrument, the clarinet carries the same interest and I have the same expectations! I look forward to this journey of discovery in Music!
METHODS USED
For all students I strongly encourage an appropriate level to begin with. I am very familiar and prefer to teach with the James Bastien series. This series come with the appropriate assigned age level. There are four books with each level. A technic, theory, performance, and Piano. While progressing through that level I mix in to teach Major, Minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales for theory and fundamentals. Other than this specific material I like to match personalities along with solos and other fun activities!
LESSON STYLE
It is very important that each student is comfortable with their playing ability and progression. I like to set realistic goals when it comes to performing and practicing. No matter the level and ability I always encourage that a student is excited and determined about their progress. It makes a big difference with the teacher and student. Creating that bond with the student is very beneficial. It is my duty to have students leaving inspired, confident and excited! I want them to come back looking for more!.
