I have a Bachelors and Masters degrees from Temple University in voice performance and have been teaching both in my home studio and at the high school and college level for over 20 years.
I have been teaching voice since I was a graduate teaching assistant in voice at Temple. In addition to my private studio, I have taught at a community music school for 10 years, a community college for 6 years and at the college level for 20 years. My students range in age from 12-90! I try to create a comfortable and nurturing environment where students can grow and learn. I am accustomed to teaching students at all levels of ability and a variety of ages and backgrounds.I take students where they are and go from there.
I believe the most important goal in learning to sing is to use a healthy tone production free of tension. This is true no matter what style of music the student wants to learn. I use my own exercises, written on manuscript paper that is tailored to the students needs, but always includes exercises for breathe control, relaxation and proper resonance. I also encourage students to record their lessons. Once the student is ready we then work on a simple melody or song. I believe it is important to choose what the student will enjoy, but also something that will not harm the voice. Whatever they are working on, I try to make it fun and encourage them every step of the way!
I like to be very organized, with a clear, step by step process for each concept the student is learning. I often use visual imagery and I demonstrate each concept before asking the student to try it. I try to put myself in their place when they are frustrated and break down each idea into small pieces. I encourage questions and also am available during the week if they need help with something. Finally I make sure I am teaching what they need and want to learn and that it is presented in an enjoyable way!
