Overview:
I enjoy teaching Children and Adults I have an AA Degree from Miami Dade College 1972 I have a BS Degree from Florida International University 1974 and Post Graduate work at Florida International University and University of Florida My major instrument is piano I have been teaching piano for over 40 years and have taught school in the Miami Dade County School System, Alachua County School System and Columbia County School Systems In addition I have taught in Public and Private Schools The range of ages I have experience with are ages 5 through adults I enjoy working with both beginners and intermediates I afford the students the ability to demonstrate their talents and love of music through recitals
EXPERIENCE
My first piano students were when I was 20 years old and have been teaching ever since that period I teach students how to read music through music notation I teach students about rhythm, harmony, expression of the music and proper ways to express dynamics Most of all however I want my students to enjoy playing and have the desire to continue once they have experienced the vast possibilities of music
METHODS USED
I initially will teach beginners by learning the musical alphabet, identification of keys on the piano, direction of sounds on the piano How to hold their hands and the proper way to use their hands and fingers to play notes We begin our music by playing songs on the piano with letters in order to acquaint the position of the notes on the piano We then transition to reading notes on the staff We learn about Rhythm of the music Values of notes and how they receive the amount of time they get I teach them to read time signatures and values of the time signatures,We study how rests are acquainted in relation to the type of note we use As the student progresses we start learning about Key Signatures, Flats, Sharps Accidentals, Scales and Chords Depending upon the age of the person I will use different books to help them begin playing or continue playing at the level they arrived at and progress thereafter I cover a wide scope of Theory My belief is that a student should understand why they are playing a note, rhythm, chord I believe my students should not only learn to play a particular piece but any piece on the level they are at in their studies
LESSON STYLE
Teaching has always been a joy to me and I enjoy having children experience the understanding and love of music It is my hope that the student enjoy what they are doing and learning Should they not understand I try to find out what is difficult Should I see that a student is not practicing that is a distinguishing factor I have worked with children with learning disabilities as well so I use various methods to attempt to have the child or adult grasp the concepts and be able to perform

She's done a great job with my 5 year old son. He's made a tremendous amount of progress since he started taking lessons with Sharon. He really enjoys learning from her.
