BM, Cedarville University, Flute Performance
Cedarville University Orchestra, Concerto Competition Winner (2018)
I'm a passionate musician and instructor that recently graduated from Cedarville University with a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance. I have been playing for 8 years and have put on three collegiate recitals. I have served in the Florida Youth Symphony's Flute Choir, and as the principal in the University Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Flute Choir at Cedarville. I'm taking a year or two off to bolster my savings before pursuing a graduate degree in performance and going on to get a Ph.D. in musicology.
I have been teaching on and off for the last two years. I have taken classes in Instrumental Pedagogy designed to teach us the best skills to teach students of all ages. I teach in either the students' home or in my living room. I've found that the most important part of a student's musical education is their outside practice and, usually, students are only willing to practice if they are having fun and feeling motivated and encouraged. I will give your students the skills necessary to become both technical players, and passionate musicians whose love for what their doing shines through every note played!
For absolute beginner's I will spend the first few lessons just working on getting a sound out of the instrument and when ready, playing some easily recognized songs (like nursery rhymes), by ear to develop aural skills from the very start. All of my students will start with the Rubank methods of the appropriate level. For beginner and intermediate students, we will work out of classical repertoire books appropriate to the level. We will also work on some pieces the student will recognize to encourage practicing. We will spend one of the first lessons "practicing" so the student learns how to use their practice time at home. For advanced students, I have a detailed and comprehensive repertoire and method list that we will work off of to make sure the students are developing all the right skills. For all students, we will work on Music Theory.
It would be my joy to see each and every one of my students become professional classical musicians. However, I know for most students, their instruments are purely hobbies. It is most important to me that each student is enjoying their time in their lessons and being motivated to practice and perform outside of lessons. I believe that while critique is crucial to improvement, acknowledging strengths and giving compliments is vital to strengthening a students self-esteem and getting them motivated to practice and thus perform well. Ultimately, each student will need different instruction for their success. I will tailor my teaching style to what your student needs to succeed.
