I am a passionate teaching musician whose practice spans classical training, jazz, beatboxing, improvisation, electronics and the avant garde. I graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2011 with a Master of Music in Flute Performance. Since moving to New York in 2011, I have had the privilege of performing with musicians from the Bang on a Can All Stars, Juilliard, eighth blackbird, the Eastman School of Music, ExhAust New Music Collective and Project Trio.
The most exciting thing about working together with a student is savoring the “aha” moments - those times when a student walks into their lesson and shows how hard they’ve been working by performing at their best. Teaching has been a fundamental part of my music-making for over 10 years. I opened my teaching studio during my undergraduate studies in Sydney, Australia and have continued to grow my practice since relocating to New York. Along with one-on-one lessons, my teaching includes interactive workshops that introduce improvisation, group composition, beatboxing and extended playing techniques for flute players young and old. I work with each of my students to help them discover their musical passions, prepare for recitals and exams and foster an engagement with music as an integral part of everyday life.
All of my students learn through working towards practical and achievable goals that we set together. Beginning students are introduced to the fundamentals of music and flute technique through pairing theoretical exercises with practical, tangible music-making. This sets up a habit from day one that all of the concepts that we learn have a real-life purpose. Younger students begin learning from the Abracadbra flute book, progressing to solo repertoire and exercises as they progress.
Throughout my musical training, my teachers have not only taught me about playing music but they’ve each become my mentors and role-models. I strive to follow this example and impart the profound role that music plays throughout history and in our daily lives. We set goals together based on what each student wants to achieve and I provide the guidance to help reach that goal whilst opening their eyes to the next step and the next step. My teaching style works to provide students with the technical tools and exposure to music today and throughout history so that they may become autonomous artists and cultural ambassadors within their world and beyond.
