Overview:
I am an extremely patient, passionate, and thorough teacher who enjoys helping anyone on their interest in drums and music. I have been fortunate in my life to have had great teachers from an early age and I am excited to share the information that has been brought on to me. Originally from Texas, I studied with the great Houston jazz drummer, Sebastian Whittaker which led me to transferring my studies to William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Throughout this time I have played in several different bands ranging in many styles with jazz being specialty of mine. I strive to be a great player of the drums but most importantly a great teacher. I look forward to sharing my experiences and my knowledge of the drums and music.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to 2008, teaching middle school private lessons as well as high school group lessons. I really enjoy teaching because of the experiences I had with my teachers in my early years of learning the drums and I've always wanted to give that information to others. I am very patient having the ability to teach any age level as well as ability level. I really encourage students to find creative ways to practice and have fun as well as weekly listening because the music gives us the tools to become a great musician. I am also very accepting to your own musical interest and am willing to teach that material as well. I look forward to having you as my next student!
METHODS USED
For beginner level students I start out with learning how to strike the drum as well as simple coordination exercises and intro level drum beats. After the student can grasp basic exercises, I introduce learning how to read music which will lead to reading out of various drum set instructional as well as technique books. For more advanced students I work out of books focusing on furthering coordination and technique, widening the ability to play different styles, chart reading with play alongs, soloing as well as the students interests. For all my students, I try to make it as fun as possible while giving you a challenge and pushing you to become the best you can be!
LESSON STYLE
I try to instill the positive qualities that come from music including the enjoyment of listening and the gain of focus and concentration when learning how to play. I will give each student material and set goals weekly at a pace that he or she is comfortable going at while still challenging the student. Teaching is something that is a passion for me because I understand how important that time can be in that persons life and I truly enjoy sharing the information. It is also something that I will continue to study as well as develop teaching techniques of my own.
