BS, Frostburg State University, Music Education and Piano performance
Overview:
I am a full time music teacher and church musician who also loves to teach private piano lessons! I have been playing the piano and performing for over 30 years. I have taught piano lessons for over 20 years. I graduated from Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education with a focus on Piano performance and education, in 2000. I love sharing music and the arts with all of my students. I teach young school age children all the way up to adults! There is no age limit for the love of piano!
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private lessons while I was in High School. I consistently taught lessons for 6 years during late high school and through college, with as many as 18 students in my studio. I have taught in music stores, in students homes, as well as at church. I have begun teaching again for the last 2 years in my home and in my students homes. I enjoy opening up the world of music for all ages. Even though I am classically trained, I do not only teach classical, I enjoy teaching all styles of music to students, catering to their interests along with proper pedagogy. It is important for the students to enjoy learning the piano as well as learn proper techniques. I try to vary my pedagogy with the students learning styles. As an elementary school music teacher I am able to find creative and fun ways for kids to learn and have fun while doing it!
METHODS USED
Typically I start with Hal Leonard or Alfred's beginner books. Once the students grasp the fundamentals I add in theory, scales, and some fun stuff that they are interested as well. When the student is engaged and interested, they are more likely to continue and practice. It is not possible for every part to be fun and games, however, even the most fundamental learning can be engaging! If I find a particular pedagogy isn't working well for the student, we can change course and find something that works better for them.
LESSON STYLE
I love to praise students and acknowledge their progress and goals. Setting goals and practice goals is an important part of music lessons. Each accomplishment or goal met is fuel for the students learning and passion. Reaching even the simplest goals can motivate a student by leaps and bounds. I try to individualize student instruction as much as possible to best suite their needs and wants in lessons. Having a student enjoying their music lessons can pave the way to a lifelong love of all things music!
