I am a graduate of the University of South Carolina with both a bachelor and masters degree in music education. I'm from Indiana and went to a high school that we completed nationally in marching band and were National Champions in 2012. From this moment I discovered how important it is to instill the principle and power of gratitude in children and adults who need the uplifting stimulation of music in their lives. I have given recitals here in Columbia and the Czech Republic and currently play clarinet with USC wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Aiken Civic Orchestra and USC campus orchestra on violin.
I have taught privately since junior year of high school through college. I have taught for marching band with 4 different bands in Columbia, SC and taught as a private woodwind instructor for Augusta University Music Camp. I taught as a Band/Orchestra director at a local private school where I started a marching band program. Currently I am the band director at Ave Maria University in Naples Fl. I enjoy students of all ages and am a big advocate that its never ever to late to learn to play or sing!! I engage students with theory, aural skills training, instrumental technique and fundamental performance habits. My students learn etudes, scales, pop songs, and music for all state auditions and recital repertoire. I often have my students collaborate to create small ensembles to improve listening skills and perform with other musicians.
I teach from a variety of materials including Rubank Method, Standard of Excellence for beginners. I have created my own curriculum standards for beginners that enforces fundamentals before adding music. This allows students to develop an ear for tonality, modality, intervals, tone quality, and timbre. It also serves the purpose of learning rhythm by sound before sight to create a solid habit of subdividing beats of music. As students transition to music by sight, they have more understanding of the core components of music, rhythm, pitch and musicality and executive skills.
I keep a notebook for every student that marks their individual progress. This notebook contains notes from the lesson, theory concepts, goals for the next upcoming lesson and dates for important auditions and performance opportunities. I often assign weekly challenges including theory for the students to complete in their notebooks. I encourage mastery of one skill before approaching the next level of instruction. Repetition as with any learning is essential for retention and building solid fundamentals. I have a music mentor-student relationship with my students as well the friend relationships. Knowing what other activities my students are involved with and what makes them excited is essential towards the progress of our time together. I am slow to reprimand and quick to encourage!
