I am a creative teacher that looks and listens to the individual to help them to master the musicianship to play their instrument with the best sound and learn and apply the style of music being studied. From my yoga training I apply ideas of right alignment that help the student to play ergronomically correct. From my Suzuki training, I apply the principles of beautiful sound and learning both by ear and with music. From my jazz training I help students improvise and create their own artistry. From my classical training I help students to learn to sight read, interpret the page correctly, play with a clean sound and play well in an ensemble. From my folk music training, I teach how to play from chord sheets, how to dirty up the sound to match the style and how to play in styles such as bluegrass, jazz, American fiddle, Irish and Scottish, Scandanavian, Klesmer or Classical. These are all styles that I currently am also performing.
I have taught through Musikalessons since 2004 and had taught in my own studio and private University settings for years before that. I have also taught elementary general music, 6 yrs; orchestra in elem, mid and high school, University String Project, community orcheatra (13 yrs); choir in Albuquerque Boy Choir (9 yrs), University chorus (8 yrs), public and parochial school choirs grades 2 thru 12 (12 years). I have also sung in choirs, operas and Played the role of Hansel in Hansel and Gretyl through Opera Unlimited for a year. I have taught HS Guitar Ensemble for 4 yrs including currently and band for 2 yrs some time ago. I play regularly in orchestra and Latin jazz band; I play and sing in klesmer band, and various folk ensembles and jams; I play regularly at a local restaurant 2 to 3 times a month.
I have teacher training in Suzuki Violin and Cello; Dalcroze movement, solefege and improvisation in piano and have applied it to all disciplines; Paul Rolland strategies for violin playing; Aldo Parisot principles for cello playing; Austin Classical Guitar Institute, Albuquerque Guitar Chamber Ensemble and Summer Festival; and Ashtanga Yoga as well as having a degree in Music Education from Western Michigan University. I have studied privately for years myself on voice, cello, violin, guitar and piano. Further, I have studied conducting for orchestra, band and choral ensembles. I have attended numerous workshops and conferences for the further subtle understandings of singing, playing and studying styles. In each instance, I look for the gems of knowledge and subtle understanding that I can pass on to the student who is ready to blossom into the next level of depth in their chosen musical endeavor.
I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. I also help guide an at-home practice schedule and lesson by lesson teach the student how to practice and polish the music at home so that the home practice time is the most productive.
Sherilyn is inventive and keeps me interested. She is encouraging and makes me want to practice cause it's fun.
Ms. Sherilyn U. is patient and adjusts her approach to my lessons based on what she observes. I see myself improving with each session.
Love my teachers. She makes me feel at ease and confident.
