I love teaching and connecting on a personal level with my students. My singing experience dates back to high school where I sang in concert choirs as well as an award winning jazz ensemble. From there I attended Orange Coast College, where I studied music theory, jazz and pop vocals. I trained privately for 5 years with the wonderful Nadia Smelser, and to this day impart to my students her techniques and methodologies. Currently, I sing in a big band swing trio called The Harmonettes. We perform locally and throughout the state of California. I perform with various musicians and ensembles, and have served for many years as part of the music ministry at my church. I've had the privilege of being part of the vocal teaching team for our gospel choir, as well as serving on the worship team, teaching introductory voice classes, conducting the children's Christmas choir, and other aspects of the arts ministry
I knew I wanted to be a music teacher as early as elementary school. I began my teaching experience as a Kindermusik educator; teaching music and movement to children birth -7 years old. I did this for 10 years before moving on to class room music, where I taught basic music theory at the young elementary level. During this time I began teaching private voice lessons in my home. I encourage my students to sing and not worry about making mistakes. I want them to enjoy the process and grow in confidence.
I typically begin lessons by listening to a student and discussing goals. Each lesson consists of a warm up time, which includes learning proper posture, breathing technique and vocal placement. After warming up we will practice using those techniques while working on a song choice
My greatest desire is encourage my students, and impart a love of music in them. It's important to me to teach students not to have an attitude of perfectionism, but to embrace each phase of their growth; to get out and learn by doing. With this in mind, I strive to create a safe, comfortable, creative environment where students feel free to express themselves and try new things. I love teaching and feeding positively into the lives of others!
