Overview:
I have been playing the piano since I was six years old. Originally from Israel, I studied Jazz for two years and then immersed myself in classical piano. I became a professional musician during that time and recorded piano to records. I came to New York in 2009 to start my studies at the City College of New York, where I have graduated from with the highest honors (Phi Beta Kappa). Teaching the piano is a real passion to me and I'm eager to be working with students who have the same passion for music as I had and have.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching children at different ages and in different scenarios, if it was musical theater or middle school children preparing for their prom. I also played extensively in Israel's most famous acting college, where I gained the ability to guide actors towards a more polished and honest interpretation. I also taught older people and found that to be a very rewarding experience. Many people report that I explain difficult concepts very well and have a way with teaching, which is great because I enjoy teaching tremendously. Teaching classical piano is my biggest love as I feel it enables me to deal with the entire profound scope of music.
METHODS USED
Artur Schnabel once said that it is wrong to have a method that students have to bound to, but that different techniques are required with every student. I learn this valuable lesson from experience and realized that every student is really a world of his own and finds interest in different things. For example, if the student likes math, then it is possible to incorporate the mathematical concepts found in Theory. If the student is more artistic, it will be better to invigorate their imagination with stories and fitting imagery that will excite them and give them an association. In general, I'm always striving to find the best way to get to the ultimate goal, which is to possess good technique, profound sensibility and vast theoretical knowledge.
LESSON STYLE
I always ask first what the student is looking to gain from these lessons, what pieces will he be interested in learning and who are his favorite composers. If that doesn't yield much, I will try to discover what are the student's interests and will try to approach him in a language that will excite him. Teachers need to be able to either keep the flame of the student going, or polish that flame. I feel like I am able to do both of these. Since I am a touring musician, I tend to plan the lesson as such that the student is left with a goal that I can examine when I return.
