Overview:
I graduated in 1981 from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Trombone Performance. I love how music is more than notes on a page. They're expressions of oneself. Knowing how to interpret these notes is very important to learning the fundamentals of music. Performing all types of music from orchestral, jazz, big band and gospel, I have learned that each style has the same note but they need to interpreted differently. I'm also a member of Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity and keep in touch with all the things happening within the organization.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught privately since 1981. My playing experiences have been in the Cleveland Ohio are for over 35 years. I have played with the Cleveland Opera in Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. I have also played with the Lorain County Civic Orchestra, various organizations and venues as a member of the musicians union. My greatest achievement has been with Solid Brass, a group i formed in 1987 with six of the finest musicians I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. We played all types of music including compositions by The Canadian Brass, Kings Brass and Empire Brass as well as our own compositions. I will encourage my students to embrace this performance attitude as it will instill confidence in their musical ability.
METHODS USED
For the beginning and intermediate trumpet, cornet, alto horn, baritone, euphonium and bass student, we will use Arban's Complete Conservatory Method. The speed of progress will depend on the students basic knowledge of musicality. For the beginning and intermediate trombone student, I have my own teaching plan as well as Blazhevich's School for Trombone in Clefs. Again, the speed of progress will depend on the students degree of musicality. For the advanced student on any instrument we will concentrate on playing duets and quartets by Gabrelli. we will also focus on the history and theory of music while composing our own etudes.
LESSON STYLE
As the student progresses through the lesson program developed for them, I hope the student will not only benefit from learning to play an instrument, but applying the thinking and intellectual power that goes along with it, into everything they do. I want each student to strive to be their absolute best at everything. We will take the discipline that is learned through practice and a sense of accomplishment and apply it in school studies as well as friends and families. Think of what it takes to excel at a sport, that's the kind of devotion I want my students to have about their music
