Overview:
I graduated in 2014 from Indiana University with a Master of Music in Piano Performance. I have over 10 years of teaching experience at both the precollege and college level. My passion for music lies in both teaching and performing.
EXPERIENCE
The bulk of my teaching experience comes from my college days where I taught secondary piano lessons to college undergraduates and children. My teaching style and methods were solidified in my graduate studies at Indiana University where I was an Associate Instructor of Piano. During this time, I taught group piano classes to music and non-music majors, private piano lessons to both graduate and undergraduate students, and worked as a counselor/practice coach for three summers at the prestigious piano summer festival Indiana University Piano Academy.
METHODS USED
I am well versed of the many piano method books out there for students today. I recommend to my younger students Alfred’s Premier Piano Course or Faber’s Piano Adventures. For my adult students, I recommend Alfred’s All-in-One Adult Piano Course because it offers a coherent approach to a well-rounded music education at the piano. Once my students have grasped the fundamentals, I begin to introduce repertoire that fits their needs and wants.
LESSON STYLE
I find that the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is watching a student develop a stronger passion for music than they had to begin with. Students are encouraged to make manageable goals for each lesson so that they can feel a sense of achievement throughout the entire learning process. The smaller goals keep the students motivated constantly enabling them to become a better musician. By focusing on the process of learning, students are learning a set of skills that will enable them to learn pieces quicker and allow for a more rewarding end product. They also are able to apply these learning skills to many different areas of study, which enhances their personal growth.
