I am a passionate instructor who loves to inspire others to fall in love with music. I graduated from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts which is where I went for my high school degree, with a concentration in flute. I went to West Virginia University for my Bachelors in Music Industry. I loved majoring in music industry because I got to play in the studio and learn all the behind the scenes of recording and music technology. I have played in a wide variety of ensembles and I love to play chamber music.
My teaching experience dates back to when I was still in high school. I would go to middle schools and give lessons. Now as a college music graduate, I have taught many ages including college peers. I think it is important to teach skills and methods that will help the student problem-solve and continue to learn even when they are alone. My students have done well in auditions and chair tests, and I always encourage both recitals and competitions. I want to make sure i am always engaging and keeping my students motivated so their instrument remains a form of enjoyment and expression!
I believe that music students are not "one size fits all", so I create an individual approach catered to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. Then, I will cater my teaching materials to the student and their situation, which sometimes means the majority of their work is print materials. Students always have the opportunity to share their opinion on the methods I use so we can better cater them to their likes.
I love when I get to see my students fall in love with music and have great passion for it. I take an individualized approach to each student, and I also set realistic goals so they can meet them. I want to make sure students improve, while not getting frustrated or bored. I think it is also important to make sure the student is always having fun, because creating music has to be a choice for a student to succeed. I always allow input from my students on what they like and what they would like more from me.
