Music has been healing, a form of release, and my passion for many years. I did not go to school for music, however I was raised in an environment, with a mother who loved rock-n-roll, so she taught us how to dance, however both of my parents were musicians. I learned to play music much later in life from instructors, and self-taught. Once I got the bug, I took voice lessons as well, eventually I became a singer songwriter. I performed in the Hollywood scene and did 1,000s of open mics for a while. I have recorded albums. Currently, I perform live online and at the local farmers markets.
Teaching has been a constant through my musical journey, mainly in person. I have not had the opportunity to be as consistent, because of my performance schedule. Online learning platforms have begun to open my eyes to endless opportunities. Both the challenge and the reenforced learning have been the most rewarding teaching experiences. No two students are alike, so understanding an individual's learning style and interests in music is the best approach. Once I realized that learning music was a lifetime endeavor, I learned to focus on time management with each area of music learning.
My philosophy is to ask why, investigate what interests the student to learn music in the first place. Nine times out of ten it is a short-lived pipe dream, when the realization of consistent practice, sacrifice, and hard work equals results is reality. I then utilize lessons plans or books that I have used, accordingly. I find it’s good practice to have some form of a guide or lesson plan, but also make sure they have the basic concept of music theory down in order for the journey to make sense. Allowing room for the student’s own creativity, but also advising slow and steady wins the race.
The best plan is to always make room for fun as much as possible, because the harsh reality of practice can be a downer. I emphasize learning with the interest of the student in mind. It is best to be enthusiastic, but I make sure to see where the energy level of the student is to term the approach for the session. I give helpful reminders of learning techniques to stay motivated in between lessons. I try to stick to a specific lesson for the session and ask the question after, what have you learned today.
