BM, Virginia State University, Vocal Performance
I am a classically trained private vocal coach and piano instructor based in Atlanta, Georgia. I have earned Bachelor of Music Degree from Virginia State University, where I studied vocal performance. I have been playing piano since 11th grade of high school, and took lessons throughout my undergraduate career. I am skilled in teaching many different genres, including R&B, Pop, Classical, Gospel, etc. I utilize a classical technique to develop a solid foundation to build from. I have worked as a music teacher for preschools and elementary schools, as well as a vocal director for a theater company, and more.
I have most recently worked as an After School Program Coordinator at a preschool in Marietta, GA. I also have experience as a music director for a theater company, a counselor for summer camps, a music teacher for preschool and elementary schools, a volunteer for several organizations, as well as being a private piano and voice lesson teacher. I have recently relocated to Atlanta from Los Angeles, CA. I have worked with children as young as 4 for private piano lessons. I have worked with adults up to age 60 for piano and voice.
For beginning piano players I use Alfred's Basic music Library Books, which is a great course! There are books for children level, as well as adult books, which may be accompanied by a workbook and a recital book. Depending on the students level, I try to accomplish completing 1-2 pages in the book each lesson. For voice lessons, I use a variety of vocal warm ups and breathing techniques to help students prepare for songs of their choice. Repertoire is always student selected, and I will make suggestions based off of the students capability. I also teach my students in voice, as well as in piano, how to sight read. In voice, I teach solfege and help them with ear training.
I allow my students to take the lead in lessons, and help guide them to achieve their musical goals. I work with children and adults, and lessons are always fun and enlightening! It is very rewarding watching my students grow and stretch their range. I encourage students to challenge themselves, but I also do not give them more than they can handle. I go at their level, and they are able to learn at their own pace. I like to get to know what each student's musical experience is, as well as their musical goals. This way I can have an understanding on how to communicate musically to them, and what needs to be done so they can reach their specific goal.
