I have been involved in music from a very young age when I started playing piano. I discovered my passion for the double bass in high school and have been playing ever since. I have studies with some of the most renowned bass performers and teachers in Europe and the United Stats and have adopted various methods and approaches to my playing and teaching. I have passion for discovering unknown pieces for the bass as well as popularizing the music of my country, Bulgaria. As a performer I have given numerous recitals throughout Europe and the United States including performances at the ISB convention in Oklahoma City and various music festivals. In the area I have worked with groups such as Symphony in C, Princeton Symphony, Allentown Symphony and others.
I started teaching in 2006 in Bulgaria and since then have had teaching assistantships at Temple and Penn State Universities where I have worked with very diverse group of students with varying experience, backgrounds and age. At Temple I have worked with beginner kids at their Community Scholars program while at Penn State I worked with more advanced non majors and undergrad performance majors. Throughout the years I have also lead masterclasses and clinics throughout the United States and Europe.
With beginner students I start by establishing good foundation through method books by Simandl and Todor Toshev which include technical exercises for both hands as well as little popular melodies to keep the student interested and develop their musicianship. With more advanced bassists I introduce exercises, etudes and methods by François Rabbath, Bottesini, Hrabe and others as well are pieces form the standard double bass repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary composition. My programs are flexible prepared on individual basis to meet each student’s goals and needs.
During my teaching experience I had the chance to work with people from different ages, with different goals and levels of development. This helped me compile a system that I have been using for the past 13 years. Having worked with a very diverse group of teaches myself, I combine the classical traditions of the Bulgarian and Western European double bass methods of Todor Toshev, Simandl and Bottesini with contemporary ones such as Rabbath, Levinson, Thomas Martin and others. I believe that every student is unique, they develop at a different pace and different levels, have different ideas and pursue different goals. By working with a broad selection of methods I can better address the different needs and challenges of every student and provide them with an individual program to help them reach their goals faster. I have also noticed that by mixing different methodical systems I can attain the students attention and keep them interested in practicing as opposing to only using one method, which sometimes becomes tiresome for the students and they get complacent.
