Overview:
I am an avid performer of classical and contemporary music and a teacher based in Portland, OR. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, I won the 2015 Concerto Competition and was a member of the scholarship chamber music ensemble for 3 years. I currently am the cello instructor at George Fox University in Newberg, OR and keep a private studio in West Linn, OR and in NE Portland. I have taught at community colleges in Washington, after-school music programs for low-income students, and as a Teaching Artist in Portland and Seattle. I perform with Daana Quartet, Portland Cello Project, and the Pacific Cello Quartet.
EXPERIENCE
I am the cello professor at George Fox University and have a lively Suzuki Studio in West Linn, OR. I began teaching cello in high school in California. I have taught at the college level as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Washington where I taught undergraduate non-majors and string technique classes. I have also held a position as a professor at Edmonds Community College. I love teaching young cellists and was a teacher for several years with Seattle Music Partners, a free after-school music program for elementary and middle school string students.
METHODS USED
I am a Suzuki cello teacher registered through Book 1 and Every Child Can! I accept students 5 and above. I am an experienced teacher of beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of all ages. With 15 years of experience and a passion for helping students find the joy of cello playing, I focus on creating a foundation of solid playing technique as well as helping students to experience the creative side of music making. I am thrilled to be a teacher with Musika and look forward to working with you!
LESSON STYLE
Learning to play the cello is hard work, but it is fun work! Playing music solo or in a group setting is a unique experience. All my students play chamber music along with their private lessons. I encourage my students to participate in our semi-annual recitals. Recitals are an important milestone to mark progress and share the gift of music with listeners. I love working with my students to find their own creativity in music. Together we work on creating a solid foundation of technique to build on musically.
